Anthony Clavane is an author and journalist who was born and brought up in Leeds.

Anthonyis currently the Chief Sports Writer for The Sunday Mirror. He left Leeds aged 18 and has always maintained an interest in his beloved Leeds United and the Leeds Jewish Community.

His research has culminated in a book called "Promised Land" which is a must read for all Leeds residents and is currently number 3 in The Amazone Football Best Sellers. Anthony will also bejoining the fantastic 150 years Heritage Project led by Makor.

Anthony will be at the Mazcc CentreTHIS Wednesday August 25th at 8pm where he talks and reads from his book.

Anthony would love to meet as many people from Leeds as possible and if you attended Selig Brodetsky Jewish Day School (now The Zone) during the period 1966 to 1971 he would be especially delighted to reunite with you.

A member writing from the Jewish Community Centre for London has sent us their monthly podcast, Sounds Jewish. This month’s edition of the Sounds Jewish podcast in association with The Guardian has a big feature on the Leeds Student newspaper controversy, featuring commentary by The Guardian's Jonathan Freedland and the founder of Muslims4UK, Inayat Bunglawala. The debate is a very interesting one and is relevant as it relates directly to Jewish students at Leeds University.

We're living up to our reputation of bringing you dances each year that have not been seen in England before .. and go on to become top new numbers for the season. There will also be recaps of the best recent hits and classics that must not be forgotten.

We have our last two standard and ensuite rooms available at a great rate - either for the whole weekend or for those wishing to join us on Saturday afternoon/ evening for the Summer Sunshine Party, with space to stay for breakfast.

Just to say that as we mentioned last week this is Leeds Bnei Akiva’s last week of the year. We will resume meetings in September once schools have returned.We have had a really great year which has seen an increase in the quality of the meetings which your children will experience on Shabbat afternoon. Bnei Akiva has also been helping the Leeds community by running Jewish assemblies in Allerton and the Grammar School attracting large audiences.We would like to thank you very much for your continued support for Bnei Akiva and appreciate any sort of feedback from the year. On Tuesday, 16th March at 8 pm LIMELIGHT DRAMA GROUP will be casting its forthcoming production of "Quartet" by Ronald Harwood.

The play, described as 'wickedly comic', will be performed on Tues., Wed and Thurs., 25, 26 & 27 May at The Carriageworks. In addition to the four main characters, all over 60, director Raymond Williams requires several 'extras'. If anyone over 20 years of age would like to appear in this play in a non speaking role, please contact Raymond Williams on 2693679 or come to Limelight House, (top of BHH driveway) on the casting evening.

Shaliach Gilad Amit

(Relatively) recently we have been privileged to welcome the arrival of our new Shaliach Gilad Amit. Here is a little information about him:

Gilad is the Community Shaliach in Leeds UK. He was born and raised in Jerusalem- whereby he had his BA and MA in education, media and mass communication studies from The Hebrew University. Prior to the Shlichut, Gilad worked as a teacher, a head of year for the 6th form in Giva'at Gonen High School, and was active within the community of Katamon Neighbourhood in Jerusalem. He also has experience in PR, as he had been working for a PR company in Savion.

Gilad served as a sergeant in an artillery unit.

Gilad would love to help you with talks about Judaism, Zionism, The Media Effects, The History of Israel and the Holocaust.

As the Community Shaliach in Leeds, Gilad brings Israel to the Jewish Community by organizing information and cultural events, encouraging Aliyah, supporting long and short term programmes to Israel, and enhances the awareness and activism amongst Jewish youngsters and students in Leeds.

Saturday 27th February : Erev Purim will be celebrated with a traditional Megillah reading starting at 7.30, and, with a chance for alcohol-fuelled discussion, is even more traditional!!

Sunday 28th February : Purim and a chance for fun for all the family. Starting at 3.30 there will be a more light-hearted Megillah reading accompanied by activities for the children in the Malcolm Featherman Hall. On offer is : mask-making, greggor-making, face painting, tombola,
calligraphy, sale of Hammantaschen (of course!). There's something for everyone and all we ask is that fancy dress be at least ..........A HAT! Dressing up clothes will be available for those who need a helping hand.

At 5.30 we are offering a supper of baked potatoes and various fillings.

At 6.30 to 9.30 it's the OY FACTOR with acts to enthral, surprise and entertain. Don't miss out on this year's talent from the Sinai community.

Jewish Historical Society launch inaugural Essay Competition

The Jewish Historical Society of England Leeds branch have launched their inaugural essay competition.

Intended to be annual event, focussing on a different theme each year, and with the aim of encouraging widespread interest in all aspects of Jewish history, this year's competition takes as its theme The Jews of Yorkshire.

Entries, which should be between 1500 and 2500 words, can cover topics such as immigration to Yorkshire, family history, the history of individual synagogues or organisations and oral history. Essays from young and old are welcome, with prizes to be distributed in Teenager (under 18) and Adult categories.

We know many people young and old are researching the Jews of Yorkshire and we hope the competition will stimulate that research’

Do you rely on volunteers for the continued success of your organisation?
Do you find it difficult recruiting new volunteers?
Would you like to enhance your organisation’s profile within the Leeds Jewish Community?

If you have answered yes to any or all of the above questions, then we are delighted to introduce the Jewish Volunteering Network (JVN) which aims to become the “One Stop Shop” for Jewish volunteering in the UK.

JVN currently works with over 140 Jewish charities large and small from across the community and our innovative work is recognised by the government, Volunteering England and a recent award as best international charity in the Jewish Choice Awards.

Following a recent successful visit to Leeds we are now aiming to bring all the advantages of our network to the Leeds Jewish Community. The JVN recently attended Limmud in Leeds and also held meetings with members of UJIA’s Leadership Development programme, Rabbi Kleiman, Bernice Pearlman, The Zone and Leeds JSoc. We were delighted by the positive support we received from these meetings and the overwhelming response was “Why can’t we include Leeds in the JVN?”

It’s so easy – we are a bit like a recruitment agency. Prospective volunteers go onto our website, key in the areas they would like to volunteer in, key in their skills and choose from a list of possible positions. It’s perfect for all those people with free time on their hands who have never quite got round to volunteering and perfect for your organisation – the volunteers come to you!

Currently, the website www.jvn.org.uk has over 1,000 registered volunteers aged from 13 to 83 and receives hundreds of hits each week. Have a look at the website and I am sure you will agree that it is time that Leeds was included. There are so many Leeds organisations who can add their details and opportunities to the site – have a look how many London has – let’s get Leeds on the map too!

Please do sign up to the JVN website and list your volunteer requirements. It’s a FREE service, so by contacting JVN you can provide further opportunities to increase the supply of possible volunteers in Leeds.

We are also on Facebook and Twitter too – great for young people today who are realising the importance of volunteering - now everyone can keep up to date with our active online social networking channels.

To sum up, the JVN:

· Promotes the concept and Jewish values of volunteering

· Connects volunteers with the right opportunities by fitting their interest and skills

· Has hundreds of charities on our network from trusteeship and fundraising to event planning, office support and hospital clowning - you can specify when you register whether you want volunteers either on an ongoing, permanent basis or for a one-off event

· Aims to make a difference to the lives of individuals seeking to volunteer

· The JVN is not designed to replace the current work of charities and organisations in recruiting their own volunteers.

Not Your Average Jewish Family: Leeds Workshop for those with Non-Jewish Family Members

It is now a well-acknowledged fact that more and more Jews are in long-term relationships with non-Jews. Many non-Jewish partners do not wish to convert to Judaism, and that leaves couples and families having to deal with a variety of issues relating to mixed faith relationships. There are also many single people who, having converted to Judaism, or having embarked on that course, have non-Jewish family members.

On Sunday afternoon, 31st January, there will be a workshop for singles and couples who have non-Jewish family members. The aim will be to enable people to share experiences and to develop support systems for such families/couples/individuals, if that is what they would find helpful.

Ambassador Dan Gillerman

Israeli Ambassador to the United Nations, 2003-2008 Ambassador Dan Gillerman served as Israel’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations from January 2003 – August 2008. His appointment marked the first time that Israel nominated someone from the private sector to this post.

Under Ambassador Gillerman, Israel saw a number of notable and unprecedented achievements in the realm of international politics and diplomacy at the United Nations. He was instrumental in passing numerous resolutions in the General Assembly and Security Council, including the first successful Israeli resolutions ever adopted by the United Nations. As a restament to his leadership, his colleagues elected him a Vice- President of the General Assembly in 2005, making Ambassador Gillerman the first Israeli representative in 53 years to serve the position, ever since Abba Eban in 1952.

Make Drama Work

Dear Friend,

You will hopefully have heard about the first Leeds Community Chanukah Show, being led by Nicky Smith, Jonathan Sumroy and myself. The performances will take place on Sunday 13th and Monday 14th December this year – you might even know somebody involved.

This is a landmark event for the Jewish Community of Leeds. Never before has there been an opportunity for youngsters from all the shuls to take ownership over an event that they are all involved in.

As with most community projects, the show is unsubsidised. As with all theatrical projects, there are some necessary expenses – sets, props and costumes do not come entirely free, no matter how skilled we are at the beg, steal and borrow game! Our aim will be to raise the funds to cover these costs and be able to feed something back into the community via the shuls and The Zone from ticket sales.

And that is where, we hope, you come in…

We will be having full colour, glossy programmes printed and would like to offer advertising space for either business promotion, or personal messages. The brochure will be

A5-sized and adverts start at £25 for a quarter page.

I would also like to take this opportunity to invite anyone with an interest in the Arts, to become Patrons of the event by making a single donation of £12. Patrons will be listed and thanked in the programme and associated with future ventures of this nature.

Of course there is always the option of sponsoring a specific part of the event; making a donation specifically for musical contribution, costumes, props or set construction perhaps.

All contributors will be acknowledged in the programme (unless they wish to remain anonymous) and will receive one free ticket to their preferred performance.

He is emerging as one of Israel’s leading keynote speakers. His presentations are fun, informative and entertaining. His seminars are causing a sensation internationally. He is a favoured speaker for Jewish Federations, Community Leadership as well as student leadership groups. He is a welcomed guest at many Christian friends of Israel organisations.

Neil Lazarus has helped train a new generation of Israeli diplomats as well as Israel’s army and airforce spokespeople.

Neil acted as the Israel advocacy policy advisor for Israel’s leading reality television program, “The Ambassador”.

Born in Britain he received his first degree in Political Science at the University of Wales. Neil immigrated to Israel in 1988 and soon after received his Masters Degree at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem.

Deborah Taylor Nursery is an orthodox Jewish nursery which caters to the entire Jewish community of Leeds and surrounding areas. The nursery has occupied its present site since 1974 and feeds into the BrodetskyPrimary School which shares the same site. There is a strong Jewish ethos in the nursery and children are helped to develop not only a sense of who they are but also a flavour of what it means to be Jewish. Children are encouraged to have a love of the daily and weekly rituals together with the numerous festivals which are celebrated throughout the year.

Deborah Taylor Nursery is registered as a full day nursery and offers flexible provision over its morning, lunchtime and afternoon sessions. Fees are calculated per term and parents can request any combination of the above sessions subject to availability.

Celebrity to open Mitzvah Day!

Sunday 15th November 2009, at 10.00am at the MAZ Centre, sees the return of Mitzvah Day. Join 15,000 Jews up and down the country who will be giving their time on a series of

wide-ranging projects. Building on last year’s successful event, Leeds is set to make a massive contribution. This year we are lucky enough to be joined by Coronation Street star Kate Anthony who plays “Molly’s Aunty Pam”. Kate will open the event before volunteering herself!

There are numerous events that you can join in with and here are just a sample:

- Volunteers will be running a huge game of Bingo for Donisthorpe residents. This will be followed an X-Factor-style talent contest devised for the residents’ entertainment.

- Children and teenagers are looking forward to help improve grounds of our community centre, which will be of benefit to the surrounding residents and visitors. Gardener Roy Adams will help volunteers put into practice a design by the centre’s art teacher. If you wish to be involved in this, you should bring your own gardening tools.

- People can volunteer to collect bags of clothes that people are donating to the “WellFair” shop in Moortown.

- Volunteers will request items from shoppers at the Kosherie to be distributed to the disadvantaged.

- Shoe boxes will be filled and decorated for disadvantaged children this Chanukah. People who want to join this activity should bring along non-edible products to fill the boxes with.

- Children are set to design Chanukah cards for the Reger Centre in Latvia.

- The Leeds Jewish Blind Society will benefit from a group of volunteers who will record talking books with the help of Radio JCom.

- Do you have old wellies from when your children were young? Bring them along as they will be filled with plants to help brighten up Donisthorpe Hall.

The Cemetery Club

Ivan Menchell’s heart-warming, bitter sweet comedy, set in New York, takes a light-hearted look at the life experiences of three middle-aged widows (think “The Golden Girls”). They meet monthly to chat to their late husbands who are all buried in the same cemetery – hence the title.

One of the widows flirts outrageously, one dedicates herself exclusively to her husband’s memory and the third is beginning to realise that she still has a life to live; throw an eligible widower into the mix and watch the sparks fly!

Politics and Israel at Leeds Limmud

Are you interested and concerned at politics and at how Israel and the Jewish community are perceived by our politicians? Come and find out directly at Leeds Limmud on 15^th November 2009. There are three speakers who can illuminate this important area for all of us and you too can question them and voice your concerns while hearing how they and their fellow MPs regard problems in the Middle East and our community back here in Britain. It will be interesting to compare their different approaches to this.

One speaker will be Lorna Fitzsimmons, head of BICOM and a former MP, who will be talking about the current challenges facing Israel, the influence of these on peace in the Middle East and consequences for our community here in the UK

The other two are local MPs Fabian Hamilton, who will also be talking about the prospects of peace in the Middle East and John Battle, who is talking on “The Global is now Local”, exploring faith, justice and peace in building local communities.

There is plenty more that will throw an oblique light on politics from our own local expert Professor Maxim Silverman who will talk on the New Anti-Semitism in France (and Britain?) to Professor Jean-Marc Dreyfus from Manchester talking on A History of Anti-Zionism.

This is just one strand of Leeds Limmud; there are presenters on poetry, music, dancing, food , history, writing, texts, magic, chazzanut and a whole host more and you can mix and match different topics throughout the day. So do come and have a stimulating and exciting day.

Mitzvah Day 2009

This year's Mitzvah Day- the country's premiere volunteering and social action day- will be taking place on Sunday November 15th commencing at 10.00am at the MAZ Community Centre.

This year we have some very exciting projects ranging from creating a picturesque garden within the grounds of the Centre. The day will incorporate events that support the start of the government's initiative of interfaith week. Like last year, we will be putting on a show at Donisthorpe Hall. So... any budding artists should contact Sara Cross.

We are aware that this co-incides with Leeds Limmud and we are hoping to have some joint projects.

AJEX ON PARADE TO HONOUR CANDIAN JEWISH AIRMEN

Seven Jewish Canadian Airmen will be remembered at Stonefall Airmen’s Cemetery, Harrogate, on Sunday 13th September when AJEX participates in the Royal Air Force ceremony to honour the memories of those lost during the last war.

At the colourful ceremony in the presence of the Mayor of Harrogate, military senior officers will lay wreaths flanked by many Standards and a Military Band. Leeds AJEX will lay a wreath and the Standard of the Leeds Major Clive Behrens branch of the Royal British Legion will be present.

This annual event is supported by AJEX as the 7 Jewish Airmen have no known relatives able to visit, so afterwards we visit each grave to say Kaddish and dip the two Jewish Standards in their honour. We remember them because they gave their lives for us.

A convoy of cars will leave the car park behind Moortown Casino at 1.45 pm. If making your own way, please be there for 2.30pm.

Medals should be worn. Please join us whether you are ex-service or not.

THE HOLOCAUST IN DIARIES & MEMOIRS

In Autumn 2009, Ian Vellins will start to lead a course on the experiences of those who lived through the Holocaust.

Shortly after the fall of Warsaw to the German armed forces, a teacher, Chaim Aharon Kaplan (whose writings will be read in Lesson 3, Holidays and Occasions) made the following observation in his diary (October 7, 1939) regarding the fate of the Jews vis-à-vis that of the Poles:

‘Ours is a tragedy on a personal level, while theirs is so merely on a national level.’

It is only in the last few years that a new spotlight has been thrown upon learning about the daily life of the Jews in Occupied Europe, focusing on providing an understanding of what the individual Jew lived through.

Sarah is 26 years old and made Aliyah from France in 2005. She immediately joined Magen David Adom as a volunteer Paramedic stationed at the MDA Station in Ashkelon. One of her first journeys out of the MDA Station was to the Ashkelon Mall which had been hit by a Grad Rocket. Sarah talks with great emotion about this visit and also her other work which included treating Palestinians at the Erez Crossing. She has just completed a course in Emergency Medicine at Ben Gurion University.

Jewish Activities or Activities for Jews?

Leeds is a fantastic place for a Jew to live! There is a wealth of groups to join, with activities for people with different interests, talents and views. The advantage of a large community like ours is that whether you are a thespian, dancer, historian, or dentist, you will always find like-minded people to share your experiences with.

I venture, however, that there is a distinction between activities for Jews and Jewish activities. The latter must involve bringing our Jewish heritage to bear on the activity, or letting the activity affect how we view or express Judaism. The Chief Rabbi argues that for too long has Judaism been segregated from art, science and culture. It is like a cerebral lesion in the brain where the right hemisphere and left hemisphere fully function, but where there is no communication between them. He says, “The time is right for a deep, far- reaching conversation between... Judaism and the arts and sciences, to create a new generation of religious intellectuals, scholars and poets”.

We are already blessed to have some shining examples of this in our community. For example, 'Singing for Pleasure' delight us with Hebrew songs in concert and the Historical Society use their skills to explore our past. Leeds Day Limmud, this year taking place at Weetwood Hall on the 15th November, involves experts in Jewish thought, culture, literature and more!

Leeds must never rest on our laurels, and should strive to be the UK's centre of Jewish creativity! One idea is to put on an art exhibition around a theme such as “Jewish Identity in the Modern World”. Works will be commissioned from trained and aspiring artists in the community, as well as accepting submissions from community groups. Another idea is to produce an academic Jewish journal allowing for intelligent discussion about Judaism, from a variety of perspectives. Both ideas will produce original and thought-provoking work of national import but bearing the stamp: “From Leeds”!

A request from a member of the community

Can Shul goers visiting Shadwell Lane synagogue to please be more considerate when parking their cars along Linton Avenue. There have been instances of double parking, mostly quite close to the entrance to Linton Avenue from Shadwell Lane thus causing a back up of traffic onto Shadwell Lane itself. Not only is it dangerous but also a misery for those living nearby.

The misery also applies to parking in the 3 bays to the entrance of Lady Park Court which are reserved for visitors to the residents in the flats there. These spaces are taken up by visitors to the synagogue and is unsuitable.

Radio Jcom is the Leeds Jewish Community Radio Station and is here to serve the whole Jewish Community. At present we only transmit on the internet where you can listen to us 24 hours a day. However, from SUNDAY 6TH SEPTEMBER 2009, we will begin transmissions on 1386 KHz in the Medium Wave Band. This means you will be able to hear us in your car, and on any AM/FM radio, be it in the kitchen, the bedroom or the bathroom.

In order to do this we need to raise £15,000.00 to pay for the transmitter and aerial. As we are a Community Radio Station, I am asking for the community to help us towards this target. After 6th September we should be self supporting through advertising income. You can help by making a donation to our Transmitter fund. Please send your donation, however big or small, made payable to “Radio Jcom Ltd” to PO Box 1386, Leeds LS17 1FX.

The Bradford Youth Players (ages 16-25) are putting on a production of "Fiddler on the Roof" in July. The show is on at the Lord Kalms Theatre at Dixons City Academy (Ripley Street, off Manchester Road, Bradford, BD5 7RR) on 15-18 July 2009, performances starting at 7.30pm.

The BYP are the only youth group in West Yorkshire which delivers all of its youth work through the performing arts. Although not a Jewish group, they are very keen to welcome members of the Leeds and Bradford Jewish communities.

Art Project: "Jewish Identity/ Modern World"

Any feedback on the following idea is welcome. Are you an aspiring artist? Is this something you would like to do? It could be a way of a) bringing different segments of the community together and b) bringing people's artistic talents to bear on Judaism. What do you think?

I (Neil Clarke- community development worker) want to initiate an arts project where, through a variety of media, people will be able to express what Judaism means to them in the modern world. This will hopefully involve every segment of the community, and culminate in a final exhibition of everybody’s work (e.g. in the community centre).

Ideas for art include:

A ‘Bayeux Tapestry’ of the Parshiyot in the Torah- updated for modern times. How would these stories play out in today's world?
Film of “Modern Jewish Identities”- looking at Jews who are both mainstream and outliers.
Paintings related to how the festivals are celebrated now that we have Israel.
Poems about “struggle” in believing in Judaism today; or about loving Israel but being in the diaspora.
Collage of “Jewish Diversity”

The exhibition can be used to showcase the work of talented artists within the community, resulting in professional and stimulating artwork being on show. Equally, however, various organisations can also get involved with particular projects. For example, members of “the Hub” art class can contribute a piece, or it could be an activity at The Zone or Donisthorpe.

There is the potential for this to be funded, and for talented artists to get a small fee.

Database Launch

Last Friday saw the first mailing from the Leeds Jewish Community Database. The numbers are growing but we want to reach every member of the community, to let them know what is going on in the community.

The ultimate idea is to ask organisations to stop sending emails out on behalf of other people. People are fed up of being flooded with emails and usually delete them anyway! According to this plan, organisations will advertise their event through their own mailing list, and through this database ONLY. So you will get an email a maximum of twice, rather than the multiple times you get at present. However, we can only do this if we get 1500 people on the database!

The city of Tel Aviv is 100 years old and to celebrate this momentous birthday, the Leeds Israeli Dance Organisation (LIDO) is putting on a party! Wednesday 10th June at Sinai, Malcolm Featherman Hall, Leeds 7.30 pm until late... please bring kosher nosh, chocolate, crisps, fruit etc.. and wear something white and/or sparkly!

Men, women and young people of all ages welcome - until 9pm we will concentrate on fun, lively material, including partner dances, that people can follow even if they don't know them. European Elections Today

Today- Thursday 4th June- is election day!

The Leeds Jewish Representative Council encourage you to take part in the democratic process, and to vote for one of the mainstream parties. Due to the elections being based on proportional representation, there is a huge risk that a BNP candidate could be one of our representatives.

If the BNP get in, then they will have access to a much larger pot of money than they do at present. This would be negative for both Jewish and other minorities.

A vote for a mainstream party will help keep the BNP out.

Who am I? pt 2

When I first took the post of "community development worker" in September I wrote a little introduction about myself on the blog (here). I also tried to introduce myself to as many people as possible, in person. However, it seems that many within the community have not matched my name to my face!

Whenever I do introduce myself, I get "Oh so it's you who do the newsletter..."; "Your the voice on the telephone who puts things in the communal diary"; "I didn't realise you updated the website..."; "My son went on your barmitzvah event..." This is usually followed up by a comment that their friends do not know about x that I ran, or y that I send out, or z that I facilitate.

It is important people know who I am, so I can help move forward any ideas they have for the community. Equally, people will then be able to aid me in projects that I initiate. For example, they will be able to tell me if someone new has moved to the community so I can deliver a welcome pack to them or express an interest in cross-communal arts project I am looking to start.

So, not for reasons of vanity, someone suggested that I posted some photos of myself in my newsletter and here!!!

History of Sinai Synagogue

Founded in 1944, for some time the community met in a variety of halls and front rooms of private houses in the Chapeltown area of Leeds, eventually moving proudly to its purpose-built modern synagogue on Roman Avenue, Roundhay, in 1960.

As the membership grew, this building was extended in the mid 1980’s and it now has a function hall, a library and classrooms as well as the main synagogue. The excellent kitchen facilities enable members, under the supervision of the Rabbi and the Sinai Kashrut and Catering Committee, to prepare Kiddushim, Chavura Suppers, social events and an annual communal Seder at Pesach.

Sinai now numbers some 750 adults and children and continues to grow.

April/May 2009 Activities Report- by Raina Sheaf

General Club
Most of our members are busy at the moment with one kind of test or another! From Sats to GCSE’s to AS, A levels and even driving tests!!
It’s tense for these kids at the moment so we are helping them by offering some one off activities and workshops as well as our regular sessions.
We are also busy planning our programmes for next term and have been offered some extra input from members and parents. It’s always good to get feedback so we can offer the community what they need from our club.

Sports
Intercity Sport – The David Clayman Trophy Championship was held again in Manchester and we lost…….again……so the less said about that the better! However, our sports coaches have assured me that it will be 3rd time lucky and that wonderful Trophy will be back with us next year!

Heritage/Leadership/Chagim
We have celebrated and commemorated over the last few weeks.
Following the Poland trip in February our participants co-presented
Yom Hashoah at the Mazcc. It was an extremely moving evening with the young people sharing their inner most thoughts and feelings. I have spoken to these youngsters myself and have been amazed at the maturity and depth of thought and feelings the trip provoked in them. We look forward to another trip next year.

The following week for Yom HaZikaron we invited an Israeli Army Captain in to talk to some of our members about life in the army, decisions that have to be made on the front line and the difficulties facing soldiers, their families and Israel during extremely challenging times. Our members asked some brilliant questions and learnt so much from that session. We then joined the community Yom Ha’atzmaut celebrations, at which a fabulous dvd was shown reflecting life at The Zone.

Fashion & Culture
We have teamed up with Tribe to raise awareness of Jewish Women’s Aid. JWA are planning a fashion show in November and The Zone/Tribe will feature in a segment of that show. We had 24 enthusiastic girls at our first session during which we customised clothes whilst addressing the serious work of JWA. The girls responded really well and we will meet again in June.

Café Chai
It’s been all go in the kitchen over the last few weeks – From Matzo Brei to cheesecake! It is of course Shavuot this week so cheesecake has been what’s cooking! It’s great to watch the children cooking but I must be careful…..those calories!

Outreach and Development
In the last report I mentioned a new project we are working on to begin in September. “Leeds Leaders” – The Zone, Brodetsky, LJWB and Donisthorpe. We have been visiting with all the current Year 11’s (61) who we know of, who are doing GCSE’s now and will be going into 6th form/college next year. They have been invited to attend an afternoon in June at which we will present the course content and they will have the opportunity to apply for a place.

We, The 4 organisations involved in this project are very excited about it and will present the whole project; content, aims and objectives when we have chosen our candidates. All Leeds Jewish organisations will have the opportunity during the project to introduce themselves and their organisations to the young people. More to follow..

Street Sound
We are very excited and thank the organisers, sponsors and donors from The Boxing night for raising some extra funds to enable us to buy an electronic drum kit and guitars so we can expand our content to music making and to those who do not have access to musical instruments at home. We continue to offer specific tuition in Street Sound and I have to mention (well I don’t have to but I will) that a mother of one of the Street Sound kids came specifically to tell me last week that we have changed her son’s life. He now has a hobby and interests he never had before, but most importantly he has friends and a social life and The Zone has given him that. I was so proud of our team, as I always am when I get that feedback.

Art and Crafts
During half term we ran a brand new art and craft workshop at which our children created, made, painted (and even cooked their art!) It was a truly fun afternoon and we hope to feature it again during Summer.

Finally
Once again - If you know a child who says we don’t offer what they want at The Zone, just let us know. As you know we believe flexibility triumphs so we aim to be as flexible as we can with our activities and events.

However, we don’t always know what your children, grandchildren, nieces, nephews or neighbours want so tell us!

It may be anything from a chess club to hair and nails activities, to journalism or photography – just let us know and we will try to schedule it in.

UJIA Extended School Programme

Extended Day School Programme

There is a serious need to provide enrichment opportunities during non-school hours to children in Merom HaGalil, a poor and peripheral region with a diverse population of 11,300 residents spread out over 24 rural communities. The area suffers from a high unemployment rate and ranks three out of ten (ten being the highest) in the national socio-economic scale. This is a problem given that the school day in Israel finishes at 1.00 pm and afternoon school programmes are expensive. Yet there is a serious need to provide enrichment opportunities during non-school hours for children in the region, to either bolster underprivileged pupils' academic achievement or prevent high school students from dropping out of school.

The UJIA, in conjunction with Keren Karev, the primary intervening organisation for the Ministry of Education, operates a 30 weeks long Extended School Day programme in 28 kindergartens and five primary schools in Merom HaGalil for 628 kindergarten children and 1,115 primary school children. Depending on the particular type of school, enrichment activities include nature/environment studies, art, music, English, communications and Torah enrichment. Included in this programme is “Tapuach” which will help bid a digital community andimprove their IT skills. 130 secondary pupils at the Branco Weiss Secondary School for high school dropoutsat Meron also benefit from the Extended School Day Programme.

Community Orientated Programming

There are three new community-orientated programmes on Radio JCom:

Lesley Millet has done a pilot show which is going out from 10.00am to 11.00am every weekday starting from Monday, and which they have called “Mid morning with Lesley”. Please do have a listen.

Then from 8.00pm until 9.00pm every evening there is J Talk, with Ronnie Miller & Guests coupled with Home & Away with Lynne Coates.
This is a new discussion with Lynne where she talks about her visit to Hungary and discusses some of the things which were not printed in the J Life article. As these are half hour slots, they alternate with Sunday, Tuesday and Thursday leading with J Talk followed by Home & Away, and then on Monday and Wednesday, Home & Away leads, followed by J Talk.

Stuart Woolf has started his series called “Living with …” and the first item called “Living with an eating disorder” has gone into the hour slots during the day. This is an interesting 22 minute discussion with someone who has an eating disorder and how they came to terms with it.

No previous experience of reading from the scroll is necessary.

Early in her career, Ronit worked as both vocalist and musician with Shlomo Artzi, one of Israel’s leading artists, as well as supporting artist for Neil Young and Joan Armatrading. Ronit is currently working on her fourth album in addition to touring in America, Canada, the UK and Israel.

Database- Security and Confidentiality

The Leeds Jewish Representative Council hopes to start sending communications out from the communal database on the 1st June. There will hopefully be a large proportion of the community on the database, meaning that everyone will be kept fully informed. Users will have the opportunity to select how often they receive a round-up of communications, what events they want to hear about and who they want to hear from.

Some people will be reluctant to sign up because of worries about data protection. They don't want to be flooded with emails, and they do not want their information being given out. To assuage these worries, the following guidelines have been set up:

Security and Confidentiality

-The Leeds Jewish Representative Council will have exclusive access to the data and your details will not be passed on to any other party. Certain other groups (see below) will be able to send out communications via the database but will not be able to see who is on it or their details.

- Only groups affiliated with the Leeds Jewish Representative Council and/or specifically approved by its honorary officers will be able to send out information via the database. A full list of organisations will be available on the website- www.lji.org.uk

- You will have complete control over which of the approved organisations send you information. There will be the option to block particular groups.

Planning Permission Granted

Massive Milestone Marks Momentous Moment

On 12th May 2009 planning permission was granted for the development at Queenshill Court and Queenshill Way.

The permission grants the demolition of 37 dwellings and erection of part 2, part 3 and part 4 storey sheltered housing development comprising 46 two bedroom flats and 16 one bedroom flats, with communal facilities including lounge and staff offices and with landscaping and car parking.

The fencing around the site should be complete by 18th May 2009 and demolition complete by 3rd July 2009.

There are still places available at the JLGB's forthcoming National Senior Summer Camp.
An amazing time will be had by all those who attend this year's camp "THE GREATEST SHOW ON EARTH"

Camp will be running from Friday 7th to Sunday 16th August and is open to boys and girls aged 11 - 15.

Radio JCom- changes to schedule

For those of you who listen regularly, you will know that the afternoon and evening play schedules have changed somewhat.

Radio JCom now have a children’s programme playing in the latter half of the 16.00 – 17.00 hour, with young Sam Berson heading up the show.

Andie’s Salt Beef Supper has now been extended to 2 hours from 17.00 – 19.00.

The 60’s classic show has moved to 19.00 – 20.00, with the exception of Sunday when the old Students show is still on.

At 20.00, the station alternates between Home & Away and J Talk. The Home & Away programme is a half hour discussion with Lynne Coates, Photojournalist and this is backed up with J Talk, a discussion with Ronnie Miller, Bernard Bloom and Mike Stevens. On the alternate days, J Talk is on its own, finished off with a selection of music.

At 21.00 they have Ivan green and Straight Answers and at the moment he is talking to Rabbi Levy.

After that there is still surreal hour with Ed Moss followed by the Night Owl, Harry Venet.

100 years of Jewish Scouting in Leeds

In 1909 a group of Jewish lads in the Jewish area of North Street Leeds, watched a group of scouts with an adult leader doing scouting games in the nearby recreation ground. They were so interested that they asked Solomon Miller and Louis Rosenhead to lead them.

Solomon Miller was issued with his Leader warrant on 4th October 1909, but Scout H.Q.in a confirmatory letter, stated that as it was taking a long time in those days to process a leader warrant, and as Scout H.Q. did not start the registration of individual groups until 1919, the 7th Central Leeds (Jewish), was almost certainly the oldest Jewish Scout troop in the world.

In the early days, the meetings were held in such places as tailor’s workshops, attics, and even in the mortuary of the old Hertzl Moser Hospital, when its usual occupants were not present! This wandering in the wilderness continued until a permanent home was found in Judean Club. The troop not only survived but spawned a cub pack, a sister Guide Troop, and later; a second Scouts troop to meet the needs of Jewish children in Moortown. Over the years, venues other than the Judean Club have included the S.H. Lyons Youth Centre, Sinai Synagogue and wooden HQ on Fir Tree Lane.

The situation now in the hundredth year of Jewish scouting is, that they seem to have weathered the dip in numbers attributable to the intrusion into young lives of the computer. They look forward with confidence, to the next hundred years, when Scouting and Guiding will continue to encourage our young men and women in respect and involvement

What is the BNP?

A Message from the Board of Deputies of British Jews about the European Elections on June 4th

The far right in the UK have had a superficial change of heart. They have moved beyond the skinheads and thugs of the 1980's and are now focused on the ballot box.

The British National Party (BNP) is the largest and most electorally successful far right political party in the UK. Its origins lay in the hardcore neo-Nazi movements from the British Movement of Fascists and the British Movement to the League of St. George and the National Front.

Under the leadership of John Tyndall, the BNP was an explicitly and unashamedly racist and antisemitic party. It carried out high profile and deliberately provocative marches in areas of high ethnic minority populations in order to stir up racial tension. Its electioneering, perhaps best summed up in the campaign phrase "Rights for Whites", was crude and upfront.

When Nick Griffin took over the reigns of leadership in 1999 he deliberately sought to steer the party away from overt extremism. However, despite trying to distance themselves from the hardcore extremism of their origins, the BNP under Nick Griffin remains a party with a number of extremist individuals, some of whom have convictions for extreme violence and terrorism. Furthermore, despite attempting to throw off labels of antisemitism and Holocaust denial, the BNP remains a party with a number of individual who are extremely antisemitic and who deny the Holocaust. Griffin occasionally tries to distance himself from such views but he has not repudiated any of his hardcore antisemitic and holocaust denial statements and articles.

The BNP think that by playing down their hatred of Jews and playing up their hatred of Muslims they will attract Jewish support. This attempt to divide communities will not work. The efforts of the BNP can be seen as nothing more than a sham and a cynical attempt to hide their extremisn and antisemitism.

Right now, I am designing a welcome pack which I will personally deliver to new members of the community. There will be a presentation folder with many useful items in that will help them settle in to the community. One such item will be a “discount card” giving them price reductions or special offers, valid for a year from their arrival. Not only will it ease the financial burden of moving to a new city and show we are a caring community, but it also means they will start investing in the local ‘Jewish Economy’.

Phone or email me if you want to be involved in promoting your business in this way and helping the community! Please specify what special offer you will provide for that first year.

A letter from LJRC President Sue Dorsey about the coming European Elections

To the Leeds Jewish Community:

The European this year elections are on the 4th June 2009. MEP’s are elected through proportional representation which means that any party with a substantial number of votes is entitled to representation. It is very likely that the BNP will gather sufficient votes to give them two or three MEP’s. It is not impossible that wecould find ourselves with an MEP from the British National Party for our area.

The way to help prevent this is for every responsible member of the community to use their vote.

The Board of Deputies are promoting an anti BNP Campaign providing comprehensive Campaign Kits to assist us in raising awareness. These kits are immediately available from the Rep Council office at MAZCC. The Campaign will need volunteers to help with the distribution of leaflets around Moortown, Alwoodley and Roundhay on two Sundays prior to the election and then help with election day itself.

Volunteers will be required on:

Sunday 17th May
Sunday 31st May
Thursday 4th June

Final details will be confirmed shortly. As a matter of urgency please canvass members of your organisation/institution for volunteers and send their details to Michele Jackson at info@ljrc.org.

The Leeds Jewish Learning Centre is an exciting new initiative by BHH, Etz Chaim and UHC Synagogues. They are collaborating to provide the community with the best of Jewish education. A number of beginners, intermediate and advanced courses are in the pipeline that will be run by the various clergy in the community.
